Mantras focus our mind and help it to get quiet if our thoughts are wandering too much. The peace of mind is one of the most important parts of a yoga practice, yet one of the most difficult. Everything comes with the practice, so we should use it as a beautiful technique to support our training. If we really want to master our emotions, if we really want to work on our mindset mantras are just amazing! There is a lot of misconceptions and misinterpretations about MANTRAS. They don’t need to be religious as they were supposed to serve to the whole humanity, beyond any system of beliefs. We should rather understanding their deep meaning if we want to learn. We don’t need to worship to any GOD – it is a metaphor of certain values, consciousness, Universe, etc. What is interesting for me is that no one wrote mantras – according to Vedic tradition they came to SAGES while meditation in this exact form. This one is a great intention for studying! It’s all about the teacher-student relationship, it is a prayer for working together and in harmony. It can be also used for a benefit of a team or a group of people working and studying together:
OM SA HA NAVAVATU
SA HA NAU BHUNAKTU
SA HA VEERYAM KARAVA VAHAI
TEJASVINAVADHITAMASTU MAA VID VISHA VA HAI
OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTI-HI
I love this mantra as it teaches a value of team effort towards reaching a common goal. Work in a non-competitive atmosphere to support each other in their endeavor. I always use it in our Yoga Teacher Training Courses, or at any time when Trimurti Yoga – as a team – faces some challenge.
May the Supreme Power protect and bless us. May “he” nourish us, giving us the strength to work together towards a common goal. May our practice and efforts be of use to humanity. Always in a non-competitive tone.
May the Lord indeed protect both of us (a teacher and a student). May he indeed nourish both of us. May we together acquire the capacity to study and understand the scriptures. May our study be brilliant. May we not disagree with each other. Om, Peace, peace, peace…
